Pop Art Hat
November 2006, Tate Britain
Many of the works of art in the ‘Pop and the 60’s’
room at Tate Britain have been influenced by popular culture.
For example some of the artists have been inspired by packaging
such as cornflakes boxes and tooth paste tubes, films, magazines
and comic books. Because of these links to advertising Pop Art
is often bright, colorful and full of bold imagery. Taking inspiration
from this art movement can you create your own Pop Art inspired
hat?
Top tips!
- Before you start work you may want to take a look at the
work by artists such as Peter Phillips, Peter Blake, Richard
Hamilton, Patrick Caulfield, Isaac Witkin and Bridget Riley.
- Collect bits and pieces that you can use to decorate your
hat. For collage material you could look around the house
for old magazines, newspapers and adverts.
- What images can you use on your hat that can also be found
in the works in the gallery?
- Think about how you will attach your hat to your head.
- When your hat is complete do you want it to wobble when
you move? If you do, how about using pipe cleaners to attach
items to the base?
