Sunsets in a box

November 2006, Tate Britain
The artist JMW Turner is well known for creating spectacular landscapes. You will find that many of these paintings are illuminated by glowing sunsets. To capture the light effects for yourself in miniature, take a regular shoe box and create a three dimensional landscape in the box using card, tissue paper, fabrics and other odds and ends found around the house. To create different light effects shine a torch through the holes, in the top of the box and look through a hole at the end of the shoebox.

Top tips!

  • A shoe box is the perfect size for this activity however you may wish to try other boxes.
  • Are you going to create a landscape from your imagination or one that you have perhaps seen?
  • What can you see in Turner’s landscapes? Will you include anything similar in yours?
  • Remember to create two holes in the box one to view the landscape and the second to let you shine the torch into the box.
  • Covering the hole with coloured cellophane then shining the torch through it will give your landscape a different atmosphere.
  • What title would you give your landscape?
