The carefully considered and often unconventional arrangement of shaped canvases is one of the key aesthetic strategies employed by Kelly. It advanced his aim to create painting/sculptures which interrelated with their surrounding space. In this work, the configuration of the square and rectangle creates distinct angles. The negative space of the wall, produced through the meeting of the two canvases, extends the field beyond their painted surfaces.
