Orpen's experience of the desolate landscapes of the battlefields of Flanders changed his life. His work often combines this desolation with a strange sense of beauty and an unexpected decorative quality that was criticised at the time.

The bleached colouring makes of this landscape the place seem other-worldly, while the corpse of a German soldier serves as a reminder of the brutal reality recently passed.
