First exhibited in Turner's Gallery in 1808, when it was among the pictures mentioned in a review of the exhibition by John Landseer as a work 'worthy of the pastoral Muse of painting'. The subtle lighting effects, which reminded Landseer 'of incense breathing morn', have sadly been obscured by later discoloration.
