Joseph Mallord William Turner  1775-1851

Yacht Approaching the Coast  circa 1840-5

Oil on canvas
support: 1022 x 1422 mm frame: 1250 x 1635 x 75 mm
painting

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856

N04662

This canvas is slightly larger than many of those Turner used either for his later finished pictures, or his studies of sea and sky. The explanation for this might be that it began life as an earlier, finished composition, which Turner started to re-work, with the intention of exhibiting again in its transformed state. Turner had already done this to his 1828 picture Regulus, which he re-painted before showing it again nine years later.
