Turner owned some pictures which may have come from Richard Wilson's studio, and copied others. This was one of Wilson's most popular subjects, repeated in various versions. Turner's copy was probably made from an engraving by J Wood, published in 1764, after the painting which was then in the collection of Sir Richard Colt Hoare at Stourhead. Turner knew the original from his visits to the house, but his copy, like the print, renders its composition in reverse.
