The first passenger railway in the world opened in 1825, between Stockton and Darlington. Although steam trains had been in use for commercial and industrial purposes for some years, this event began a new era of passenger transport.

Although the advent of steam travel transformed the way people led their lives, few artists ventured to represent steam trains.
