Hilton drew every day throughout his career. The works here were made later in his life. They show the fluency of his drawing which was an important feature of his paintings too. His main subject was the nude female body. He was able to capture the character of a figure and her pose with only two or three lines. To achieve this he needed to be as much a sympathetic observer of human movement as a brilliant draughtsman. In his observation and depiction of the body, he captured its humour and absurdity, awkwardness and eroticism with a striking degree of empathy and understanding of the human condition.
