Big and Small is Tate Britains Local Early Years and Family Programme of events, resources and projects aimed at audiences in the City of Westminster and London Borough of Lambeth. The programme is generously funded by the Big Lottery Fund, enabling Tate to continue building partnerships with local organisations, and relationships with local families.
As part of Big and Small, Tate develops links with local organisations through outreach taster sessions, large-scale Family Day events on-site, gallery resources and in-depth projects with a specific focus. All activities are free to attend and many of the families who take part have never been to Tate Britain before. We also run a volunteer programme for participants to continue their involvement with Big and Small.
All Big and Small activities are led by artists who use the Tate collection and temporary exhibitions as sources of inspiration, and involve a range of approaches including making, looking, play, movement, sound and music. There is an emphasis on developing areas of language, interaction between parents/ carers and children, imagination and creativity, with a strong focus on learning through play in informal settings.
We work closely with Childrens Centres and Early Years providers in the City of Westminster and London Borough of Lambeth to ensure that families in both boroughs have the opportunity to engage in a range of creative, intergenerational and fun learning activities.
