We’re family-friendly
We are fully equipped for your visit. We have baby changing facilities at each site and all our galleries have cloakrooms with buggy parking. No need to struggle!
Start where you like…
You dont have to be methodical, chronological or logical. Maybe your children can take the lead?
…but take a map
All children like using maps to find their way around, and older ones are often interested to know why weve grouped works the way we have. You can buy a map in the gallery.
Take your time
Feel free to stand or sit in front of a work for as long as you like.
Enjoy it
You don’t need to be an expert to look at or talk about art. Dont feel you have to get it to enjoy it – take whatever you like from a piece.
Make some noise
Its OK to talk at Tate!
Your thoughts count
There are many ways to get a conversation going. When you visit a gallery you could try asking questions like: What is the loudest, smallest, largest, funniest or strangest work in this room?
Have fun with art
You and your family can try these activities in any of the galleries.
Strike a pose
Get your child to secretly choose an artwork with a person in it. Once they have looked carefully at the pose, find a space in the room and encourage them to try to recreate the pose. The rest of the group can then try and spot the artwork the pose came from.
Give us a clue
Encourage your child to find a portrait in the gallery that reminds them of: someone in your group; someone famous; someone you all know (perhaps a neighbour or a friend). With the help of clues, the rest of the group can guess the chosen person.
See it from their perspective
Get down to your childs height and see what they see. The change in eye-level might make you think and feel differently.
You dont have to do it all
There are lots of things to see and do at Tate, so try different things each time. Remember: under 12s can visit any special exhibition for free if they are with an adult. Our collection displays do change regularly, so you wont see the same things year after year.
Try a change of pace
Take a break and have something to eat. Our cafés offer healthy – and fun – childrens menus and we provide complementary crayons and activities.
We are currently running a Kids eat for free offer at the Rex Whistler Restaurant.
Join in
We run events for kids and families in all our galleries.
