The Big Painting Challenge, a television programme broadcast on BBC1 during February and March this year, searches for Britain’s best amateur painter. Over the course of six episodes, ten amateur artists try their hands at portraiture, still life, landscape, cityscape, seascape and the figure in movement. Special tours inspired by the themes of this BBC series take place at Tate Britain.

To find out more about how famous artists have approached the themes from the BBC1 series, Tate is offering special tours of its collection, which spans 500 years of British art. Led by expert tour guides, artists Grace Adam and Frank Wasser, the tours will explore the many ways artists have approached subjects from the human figure to the landscape around us. You’ll find out how styles of painting have developed over the centuries, and how artists today use a wide range of materials to create their works and comment on society.
