This display of six paintings and three sculptures celebrates the recently announced promised gift of these works to Tate by the collectors and philanthropists Mercedes and Ian Stoutzker. The collection that they have together built up over more than forty years is the result of their interest in and engagement with contemporary British art. On the whole they have chosen works made by artists at significant moments in their development, and quite often early in their careers. Each work of art has been lived with in their home and it is a testament to their generosity that they have decided to give these works to Tate.
Mercedes Stoutzke has recently remarked, ‘every single one of these works means a lot to us and we just wanted to share these feelings. They should be seen by as many people as possible and touch their hearts.’
