Moore Outside – Two Piece Reclining Figure No. 3, Brandon Estate

The Two Piece Reclining Figure had been on Moore’s mind for years. In his early Thirties he started doing a number of small carvings in two or three pieces. They were all more abstract than the Reclining Figures. He wanted to be free of having to find a ‘reason’ for doing the Reclining Figures and freer still of having to find a ‘meaning’ for them. They gave him a subject that allowed him to try out all kinds of formal ideas – things that he didn’t yet know about for certain but wanted to experiment with. The subject-matter is given. He said: ‘It’s settled for you, and you know it and like it, so that within it, within the subject that you’ve done a dozen times before, you are free to invent a completely new idea..

My favourite route starts at the corner of Kennington Park Gardens and Otto Street. With your back to Kennington Park Gardens turn left along Otto Street. After a short walk there will be a dirt footpath on your right. Take this footpath towards the Cornish House tower block. Skirt around the right side of the tower, towards the blue-grey plinth on the hillock behind it – that’s where you’ll find the Moore.

Here’s one of my personal maps. Bring it with you, it will help you find your way.
