Polish artist Pawel Althamer’s work for The Fifth Floor responds to both Liverpool’s resounding passion for football and an interest in working collaboratively to examine the role of art within a social collective.
His projects, created in a range of media, as well as through performance, are often developed and realised with communities and groups from all walks of life, including homeless people, prisoners, or even the neighbours of a housing block shared by the artist. A recurrent theme of the work is to express the power of collaborative community spirit.
In The Fifth Floor Althamer is initiating an exchange of experience by working with young football supporters from Liverpool FC and Legia Warsaw FC. As part of the project Legia fans will to come to Liverpool and work in tandem with Reds fans on a series of large-scale sculptures and banners, which will be displayed within the exhibition.
Project implemented with the support of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in preparation for the Polish Season in the UK 2009–10.
