Bringing together the seemingly divergent realms of politics and shopping, Meckseper repackages found objects and images into unusual assemblages. Photographs of political protesters sit alongside fashion accessories, magazine advertisements and shiny packaged goods in beautifully-lit vitrines reminiscent of smart shop windows. Her work highlights the ways in which radical ideals are inevitably tamed and packaged by consumerism.
Meckseper has made two new vitrines and a wallpaper design specifically for this exhibition. Her vitrines can be seen through the front window of the gallery space, which was itself originally used as a bookshop, leaving the approaching viewer to question whether these are works of art, or commodities to be purchased.
