One of the most important skills to have is an ability to discuss and have confidence in your work.

Foundation students Emma and Julian present their portfolios and explain how they will justify their editing decisions at interview. Emma is specialising in Fine Art and Julian in Visual Communication. Both are students at Chelsea College of Art and Design.

Name:Julian Shaw
Age: 19
Applying to courses in Visual Communication

What are your main aims for your portfolio? "I’m trying to get the sense of a final piece – although I will show my sketchbooks and background work, the final piece is considered quite important in Visual Communication".

What kinds of editing decisions do you have to make? "I think you shouldn't be afraid to put something in that's a bit more interactive as long as it's easy to operate and use".

What are the important things to remember when putting together a portfolio? "I prefer to have my work as neatly lined out as possible but sometimes the relationship of the work might mean that it's got to be more hands-on. I like to photograph my work but others don’t. What’s really important is that the portfolio flows as a piece of work itself".
