I think keeping a level head at art school is a necessity and remembering that University is not the be all and end all, but that it can be an opportunity and space to extend yourself. Make good use of facilities, equipment and tutors, because you’ll miss them when they’re gone. I also wish I’d done more work experience in the real world related to my practice. - Nicola Carey, 22, BA Photography, University College Falmouth

Work very hard. Keep your energy levels and ambition up and even if it gets knocked just hang in there. And read a lot! I find that really helps…and just keep busy with what you love doing. - Charlotte Norwood, 19, Year 1 BA Art Practice Goldsmiths College

It’s all about communication - if you build relationships with tutors, technicians and librarians they always want to help. - Lara Louram, 21, BA Graphic Design, Chelsea College of Art and Design

In graphic design degrees you’re often not encouraged to collaborate, but my advice would be to do this while you’re still at University. In my second year I took part in the Young Design Programme and helped to redesign a sixth form with spatial designers and a pupil client team. This was absolutely fantastic experience and great for my CV. - Holly May Mahoney, 21, BA Graphic Design, University College Falmouth

I would say that you should always know that there are going to be people out there who are better than you. At University you will meet many people, all from different trainings and disciplines from yourself, meaning you cannot judge yourself against others. They are there to learn from. - Alex Holubowicz, 20, Year 2, BA Typography and Graphic Communication, University of Reading

Go for it! It's such a fun fulfilling thing to do. Aim high. Take every opportunity that comes your way. Make the most of your time as it goes quickly. - Liz Warrington, 28, BA Painting, Camberwell College of Arts
