Extra Art

Taking a short course or evening class is a good way to gain an introduction to Art School and to try out something you may not have done at school. Some courses are expensive but free programmes do exist.

Read what students had to say about their short courses...

I did a short course at Edinburgh one summer, after my foundation, on illustration, which was okay but in hindsight not very practical as I didn’t need any additional illustration tuition. - Elly Stringer, 24, BA Illustration and Animation Manchester Metropolitan University

I did a short course in Photoshop that really helped build my portfolio and skills, especially as I was applying for Visual Communication. - Ellen Turnill, 19 Year 1 Visual Communication Glasgow School of Art

I have taken a short course in book binding which helps in Graphic Design as print will never die. - Lara Louram, 21, BA Graphic Design Chelsea College of Art and Design

I took part in a summer school at Chelsea in 2003. It was a fantastic experience to be a part of such a historical school at such a young age. - Dante Valentine, 21, Year 2 BA Graphic Design Chelsea College of Art and Design

Portfolio Advice Day

Tate Britain works with University of the Arts London and Widening Participation to deliver Portfolio Advice Day, which invites young people who are members of the first generation in their family to go to University to bring their portfolio along to the gallery where it will be seen and reviewed by tutors from institutions across the country.

Students are able to try out mock interviews, talk to student representatives and discuss how to adapt their portfolios with a number of professionals.

The next Portfolio Advice Day is in December 2008.
