Images of Tom Evans' work:
I took the Fashion pathway on my Foundation year. It was then that I became interested in Knitwear as a form. It’s great because you get to make your own material and it can look so incredible – when I was deciding on a degree course I realised Knitwear was something I could break ground in.
I like how, with Knitwear, you can go back to basics where the creative process starts. You design everything you make and do lots of research. It’s a very specialist course with a placement year and you get lots of technical help but the making process can be very time consuming and labour-intensive.
In my third year (Year in Industry) I took a placement in New York working in Womenswear Design for the Ralsey Group as a PA and then a design assistant. Later in the year I worked at Burberry.
At the moment we’re all working towards our final collection. I’m focusing entirely on Menswear.
Yes! Fashion courses are often the most expensive. With Fashion Design the process is based on the journey of a garment from beginning to end so materials can be costly.
There is a massive freelance field in Knitwear. Lots of people join agencies. I really enjoy the challenge of working for a specific brand and I’d like to continue with that.
