Nahnou-Together

In partnership with the British Council, Tate Britain is running a project designed to increase dialogue between young people in Syria and Jordan about themselves, art and cultural heritage. ‘Nahnou’ is Arabic for ‘we’ and the project name ‘Nahnou-Together’ reinforces the idea that we are one. In 2005-6, the first year of the programme, artists, teachers and Tate Britain gallery educators from London visited the Adham Ismail Centre of Fine Arts, Damascus, and took part in workshops with Syrian counterparts in which they learnt about each other’s education and art practices. Syrian artists then visited Tate Britain and Quintin Kynaston School, Westminster, to run workshops with students. This was part of a continuing programme of practical workshops that ran through a six-month period, during which students and artist educators. An exhibition of the work produced through this exchange was shown both at Tate Britain and in Old Damascus City in June 2006. The success of the programme has led to its expansion in Jordan in 2006-7.
