Aiysha’s recent work has been based upon race and identity and has always been interested in issues that relate to young British Pakistani Muslims. She embarked upon research and exploration into the Oldham riots, which took place in the summer of 2001, just before September 11th.
Aiysha explains: “My interest in exploring the younger generation's conflict with identity stemmed not only from culture and religion but also nationality. Some considered themselves British while others professed that their faith defined them. The work is named after a song by the rap artist Naz, the reason being because my images are purposely confrontational. The gaze almost calls the viewer to stare, they are aggressive yet alluring. I will continue to make work about race and identity as I feel it is something very important to discuss and be aware of in today's climate”.
