Despite its name, Man of the Night resembles a bird as much as any human form. This hybrid quality is typical of Richier’s work. It has its roots in her childhood in Provence, with its vivid folklore and rich flora and fauna. A contemporary critic wrote of Richier’s forms: ‘Through these monsters, insects, reptiles, humanised birds, leaf-like girls and log-like men, her work induces strange emotions in us, making us experience those primordial feats and passions that a civilised way of life has deadened in us.’
