Joseph Mallord William Turner Study for a Classical Landscape 1805

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 43 Verso:
Study for a Classical Landscape 1805
D05558
Turner Bequest XC 43a
Pen and ink on off-white wove paper, prepared with a grey wash, 258 x 150 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This composition continues on folio 44 (D05559) and is further extended slightly on the right of folio 45 (D05560). The design is classical, but elements of the setting, including a wooden bridge, might be borrowed from views near Kew Palace in this sketchbook. A rather more elaborate classical composition, also involving a rustic bridge, on folios 57 verso–58 (D05582–D05583) may be a development of this design.
