The markings at the uppermost register are a continuation of those on the folio opposite (Tate D28135; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 49a). Below is a view of the city of Liège, incorporating the quayside with boats on the left, the dome of St Andrew’s Church, the Maison Curtius and a number of spired buildings, the latter possibly suggestive of the twin spires of St Bartholomew’s Church. The composition is similar to the view of Liège produced by Turner in gouache, pen and ink and watercolour on blue paper (Tate D24664; Turner Bequest CCLIX 99). The rough drawing on the lower register is of Huy, looking up the Meuse from the surrounding hillsides to the north.
