Joseph Mallord William Turner A Castle or Mansion on a Ridge 1808

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 84 Verso:
A Castle or Mansion on a Ridge 1808
D07239
Turner Bequest CVI 81a
Pencil on white wove paper, 108 x 185 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. As a hasty outline, this sketch is similar to that on folio 83 verso (D07237: Turner Bequest CVI 80a), perhaps representing the same building. A more finished version of the present sketch, worked with pen over pencil, is on folio 85 verso (D07241; Turner Bequest CVI 81). For this, Eric Shanes1 suggests Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire, which Turner could have passed earlier on his tour in 1808. A further possibility, closer to the territory covered in this sketchbook, might be Haddon Hall.
