Turner turned the sketchbook to landscape format to make this copy. Titian’s picture had belonged to the Gonzaga in Mantua and then to Charles I in London. It was acquired by Louis XIV in 1662 and regarded as one of the greatest treasures of the Louvre. Turner began a long analysis of it on folio 31 verso of the sketchbook (D04314), for which see catalogue entry for a full transcription.
