Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg inferred a relationship to Windsor Castle from the Thames of circa 1805 (Tate T03870; displayed at Petworth House),1 a colour study for which is on folio 29 verso of the sketchbook (D05532). However, as Hill observes, the arrangement is classical but derived from scenery at Richmond as seen from upstream, as for example on folio 19 (D05516).
