For a classical composition possibly based on this view, with a similar rustic bridge, see the double-page spread on folios 43 verso–45 (D05558–D05560) and perhaps another on folios 57 verso–58 (D05582–D05583). Gage remarks on Turner’s typically ‘attenuated trees’ in the present sketch and on folio 43 (D05557), comparing them to examples in his pictures of around 1811 on the basis that the sketchbook was approximately of 1811–12 as mistakenly redated by Finberg (see Introduction).
