Hill’s suggestion of Clifton Hampden is probably correct, the sketch showing the bluff on the Oxfordshire bank of the Thames on which the church stands. As Hill further notes, a sketch inside the back cover (D40637) seems to be of the same site from a different angle. Originally from the twelfth century, the church would have been derelict when Turner saw it. The present church of St Michael and All Angels, incorporating the early remains, was designed by George Gilbert Scott, 1843–64.
