Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, and continued to the left on folio 133 (D06351). Moreover as Hill shows by reproducing them together, this portion of the double-spread view is also continued to the right on folio 131 verso (D06348). The view of the castle from just below Romney Lock takes in the State Apartments on the left, the Norman Gateway and North Terrace to the right, all rendered as a simplified profile. From this sketch, Turner worked up a more idealised coloured version in his contemporary Studies for Pictures. Isleworth sketchbook (Tate D05532; Turner Bequest XC 29a). This in turn served as the basis of Windsor Castle from the Thames (Tate T03870; displayed at Petworth House)1 bought by the Earl of Egremont, probably as Hill observes from Turner’s Gallery in 1806 as it is inscribed as painted at Isleworth – that is, at Sion (or Syon) Ferry House which Turner left that year.2
