This town appears to be Lewes with the River Ouse and on the left the wooden spire of St Michael’s Church (see also folio 33 of the sketchbook, D05650) below the mound of Lewes Castle, which is out of sight. Turner may have condensed his view somewhat. Views of Lewes and Lewes Castle run to folio 38 (D05655).
