The identification of Battle Abbey was correctly given by Edward Croft-Murray in pencil annotations to a copy of Finberg now in Tate’s Library. Turner has drawn a corner of the gatehouse from inside the abbey walls. For another view of the gatehouse see folio 49 of the sketchbook (D05666).
