Turner’s viewpoint is a narrow strip of level ground overlooking the south-east side of Lulworth Cove, south-west to the Isle of Portland and north-west to Hambury Tout, the steep hill in the distance on the right. There is a slightly more detailed version of the same view in the Corfe to Dartmouth sketchbook (Tate D08832; Turner Bequest CXXIV 21a), among others of the site dating from Turner’s 1811 tour of the West Country, when the present drawing was probably also made.
There is a nearby view on folio 22 recto (D10237; CXXXVII 21), and a further Dorset subject (although then in Hampshire), Christchurch Priory, on folio 5 recto (D10310; CXXXVII 67). Lulworth Cove is the first of the sites in Turner’s West Country topographical notes on folio 1 recto (D10206).
