For Ramsgate in this sketchbook see note to folio 22 verso (D10451). Here, the lighthouse is at left and the harbour wall at right. A closer view facing this one on folio 24 (D10576; Turner Bequest CXL 85) is similar to the watercolour (Tate D18150; Turner Bequest CCVIII Q) later used for The Ports of England. Evidently Turner sketched these views from a boat, approaching the harbour from the north
