Despite Finberg’s suggestion of Kew, this is James Paine’s Walton Bridge, with its unusual fan-shaped headings to the piers. There are several studies of Walton Bridge in this sketchbook, which might collectively be associated with a fresh investigation of the subject leading eventually to the watercolour (private collection)1 engraved by J.C. Varrall in 1830 for Picturesque Views in England and Wales; see especially notes to folios 48 and 51 (D10490, D10496;Turner Bequest CXL 42, 45). In essence, however, Turner’s watercolour reprised his earlier painting Walton Bridges (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne).2
