As well as views from outside the town, Turner drew two close views of its medieval buildings in this sketchbook. This one shows the Land Gate, a remnant of the old town walls, from just outside, looking through to Hilder’s Cliff as it climbs into the town. For a drawing of the Ypres Tower at Rye see folio 53 (D10500; Turner Bequest CXL 47).
