Joseph Mallord William Turner Buildings at Winchelsea c.1816-19

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 66 Recto:
Buildings at Winchelsea circa 1816–19
D10524
Turner Bequest CXL 59
Pencil on white wove paper, 155 x 95 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
As well as a group of houses among trees, Turner shows a tower, evidently the same as appears to the right of the Pipewell Gate on the north-east edge of the town in sketches on folios 64 verso and 65 verso of the sketchbook (D10521, D10523; Turner Bequest CXL 57a, 58a). This is no longer standing. For its possible identity as a former castle or church see notes to the earlier Sussex sketchbook (Tate D05763; Turner Bequest XCII 44).
