Finberg’s title does not seem right and instead this drawing, made with the sketchbook inverted and continuing slightly on folio 39 (D10403), forms a double-spread view of Wharfedale with Otley very lightly indicated in the middle distance on the left. The separate drawing called by Finberg ‘part of the Wharfe valley’ is on D10403 and is a more detailed vignette of the same view of Otley with the church and bridge. There is a more detailed panorama from a similar viewpoint across folios 39 verso, 40 verso–41 (D10404, D10406D10407).
See Introduction and notes to folio 1 (D10343) for Turner’s visits to Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall and his views of Wharfedale in this sketchbook.
