This slight outline sketch of Dunbar shows the ruins of the castle in the centre with rocks to the right going out to sea. Turner made numerous sketches of Dunbar Castle, from rough outlines like this one, to carefully delineated drawings, recording the ruins from every angle in order to assimilate as much topographical information as possible while trying out different compositions (Scotch Antiquities sketchbook Tate D13615–D13640; Turner Bequest CLXVII 17a–32).
