Having stopped and Newcastle and North Shields, where he made several sketches (see folio 13; D13473), Turner took the opportunity to make this quick sketch of the nearby Tynemouth Priory from the south, probably from South Shields. The sketch continues on folio 15 (D13477) with the cliffs at the mouth of the Tyne Estuary. The priory is also seen in a view of the Tyne estuary on folios 2 verso–3, and in a sketch of North Shields on folios 3 verso–4 (D13452–D13453, D13454–D13455).
Around this time (1818), Turner also painted a watercolour of Tynemouth Priory (Bolton Museum and Art Gallery), based on earlier sketches.1
