This cluttered harbour is Fish Quay at North Shields. Across this page and folios 15 verso (D13478) Turner has drawn a view of the quay looking west up to the town and out to the River Tyne. Beyond the ragged shacks (or ‘shiels’ from which the town gets its name) are the two harbour lights, Low Light at the left, and High Light at the right above the houses. The harbour is made out by the masts of ships, and the beach and shoreline of the Tyne can be seen on folio 15 verso. Turner made a similar view across folios 1 verso and 2 of this sketchbook (D13450–D13451).
For more information on Turner’s visit to North and South Shields and his sketches of the town and surrounding area, see folio 13 (D13473).
