A view of Dunbar from the west, the ruins of the castle gate are framed by rocks in the foreground on either side. Turner is standing on Long Craigs, a rocky outcrop just west of the castle. There are similar views of the castle on folios 18 verso–20 (D13615–D13618; CLXVII 17a–19) and there follow in this sketchbook two further views of the castle from the west (folios 22 verso–24; D13621–D13624; CLXVII 21a–23).
There are several small brown marks at the right and pale foxing at the left of the page.
