Stepping right up to the castle ruins which sit on a promontory of rock on the East Lothian coast, Turner was able to sketch Dunbar Castle in detail over the next few sketchbook pages (folios 26–30; D13628–D13632; CLXVII 25–29). The present sketch (continuing on folio 26) looks north towards the castle gate and other ruins; Turner was probably standing on the South Battery to get this view. At the left of the present page the promontory and ruins fall away into the sea.
