This view of Linlithgow Palace and, to the right, St Michael’s Church, are seen from across Linlithgow Loch to the west. The Loch itself cannot be seen in the current sketch because it lies behind a screen of trees. Turner made a number of sketches of the Palace from the west, of which folios 44 verso, 50 verso and 51 verso are closest in viewpoint and composition (D13658, D13670 and D13672; CLXVII 42a, 48a, 49a).
