Of a series of seven sketches of Linlithgow Palace from the west (see folio 44 verso; D13658; CLXVII 42a), this double-page sketch is the most panoramic, taking in the view from the north side of Linlithgow Loch to the town of Linlithgow to the south. The present page shows the loch surrounded by gentle hills and clumps of trees. At the very bottom left of the page is a small arched bridge that crosses a stream which flows into the loch at the west (see folio 50 verso; D13670; CLXVII 48a). The sketch continues on folio 54 where Linlithgow Palace, St Michael’s Church and the old Town House are depicted (D13675; CLXVII 51).
