The subject of this sketch is not conclusively identified although it appears to depict a view on the outskirts of Rome with the city walls stretching across the left, leading the eye of the viewer towards and the line of snow-covered mountains in the far distance. Like many drawings within this sketchbook, the composition has been executed over a washed grey background, although the roughness of draughtsmanship suggests that it was down with great speed, or possibly from a moving carriage.
