This rough sketch depicts the Rocca di Angera, a medieval castle built by the Borromeo family on the hilly shores of Lake Maggiore opposite the town of Arona. Turner’s viewpoint is from the north, looking from the Simplon road which skirts the western shores of the lake. For further sketches of the castle see folio 27 (D16940).
