Drawn from the Half Moon Battery, or perhaps from the King’s apartment in the Royal Palace of Edinburgh Castle, this sketch, made with the sketchbook inverted, looks over the parapet of the battery with a flag, and down to the left at the crow-step gabled roof of the Portcullis Gate. From the same spot Turner made a sketch looking towards Edinburgh on folio 38 verso (D17569).
At the right of the page is the profile of Arthur’s Seat continued from the sketch on folio 56 verso (D17604).
