With the sketchbook inverted are two rapidly executed drawings of boats under sail in Leith Roads. The three or so vessels, drawn with the simplest and quickest means at the top of the page, are repeated below to the west of Leith’s old West Pier, which has now been removed, with its signal tower or lighthouse at its head which is also drawn on the Inside Front Cover of this sketchbook (Tate D40687). The inscription may refer to a ‘Red [Boat]’.
